Worked examples

Batting: a batter scores 450 runs in 12 innings, with 2 not outs, from 360 balls. They were out 10 times, so their average is 450 ÷ 10, which is 45.00. Their strike rate is 450 ÷ 360 × 100, which is 125.00.

Bowling: a bowler takes 12 wickets for 380 runs in 40 overs. Their economy is 380 ÷ 40, which is 9.50. Their average is 380 ÷ 12, which is 31.67. They bowled 240 balls, so their strike rate is 240 ÷ 12, which is 20.00.

Frequently asked questions

Why do not outs raise a batting average?

Average divides runs by the number of times a batter was out. Not-out innings add runs without adding a dismissal.

What is a good economy rate in T20?

Under 7 runs per over is usually very good in T20 cricket, though it depends on the pitch and phase of play.

What is the difference between bowling average and strike rate?

Bowling average is runs conceded per wicket. Bowling strike rate is balls bowled per wicket. Both are better when lower.

Can a batting average be calculated with no dismissals?

No. If a batter has never been out, their average cannot be calculated, so it is usually shown as a dash.
