Quick reference
| Cricket notation | Balls | Decimal overs |

| x.2 | +2 | +0.333 |
| x.3 | +3 | +0.5 |
| x.4 | +4 | +0.667 |
| x.5 | +5 | +0.833 |
Why cricket overs are not decimals
An over has six balls, not ten. So the number after the dot counts balls, from 0 to 5. That is why 10.5 overs is followed by 11.0 overs, and why you should never add or divide cricket overs like normal numbers.

Where you need this
- Net run rate, where 19.3 overs must count as 19.5.
- Required run rate, to find the true overs remaining.
- Economy rate and bowling strike rate, which depend on balls bowled.
- The Hundred, which counts in balls rather than overs.
A quick mental trick
Multiply the whole overs by 6 and add the balls. For 13.4 overs, that is 13 × 6 + 4, which is 82 balls.
